For the 3rd episode of the series, we met up with Nottingham based singer-songwriter Josh Kemp.
Unlike the other episodes, we went into this one without much knowledge of what the evening would entail. To top it all off, we had travelled outside of London to meet and so had to completely adapt and play it by ear.
We arrived, started to get to know Josh and jumped into the interview. That’s when something spectacular happened. This wasn’t just any gig, but a charity event in support of Macmillan!
Josh spoke about his career, his advice to aspiring musicians, and the truly inspiring celebration of musician John Birch’s life through charity festival Birchfest.
So we had our story, now we just needed to enhance it. That included combining the interview with other segments for the episode. The plan was to shoot Josh as he performed his set.
Band & music photography is something we’re quite experienced in, but quickly creating a multicam setup, hooking ourselves up to the mixing table and finding a balance between capturing each song perfectly, but also having variation, was a real challenge - especially to do spontaneously!
So we balanced our steadicam, readied our tripod and set up a tiny Sony A6000 in the corner (seriously impressed with the low-light footage from such a compact camera) and captured an exhilarating evening of music!
